Last year we launched Silver Circle Aquavit, the first aquavit from Wales and only the third in the UK. We chose to produce an aquavit in a gin, whisky and spiced rum dominated market because we LOVE it, and we wholeheartedly believe that aquavit is going to grow into a major spirits category in the UK in the coming years. Here's why..
Aquavit has been a staple spirit in Scandinavian countries for centuries, with a long and rich history dating back to the 15th century. Despite its popularity in northern Europe, it has remained relatively unknown in the UK. However, that is all starting to change. With the rise of interest in new and unique flavours, there is a growing appreciation for the complex, herbaceous taste of aquavit.
Gin has been incredibly popular in the UK for many years, with the number of gin distilleries growing rapidly and new flavours and styles emerging constantly. However, gin has become mainstream and many gin drinkers are now looking for something different, something that sets them apart from the crowd. Aquavit offers a new and exciting option for these drinkers. With its complex, herbaceous taste, aquavit provides a change of pace from the more traditional gin flavours, making it a perfect alternative for gin drinkers looking for something new.
Compared to gin, aquavit is incredibly versatile. It can be enjoyed as a sipping spirit, as well as a mixer in cocktails. This makes it appealing to a wide range of drinkers, from those who prefer a traditional martini to those who like to experiment with new and innovative drinks. The versatility of aquavit also allows for creativity in the distillation process, with different herbs and spices added to create unique and varied flavour profiles.
Another factor contributing to aquavit's potential success in the UK is its versatility when it comes to food pairing. Unlike many other spirits, aquavit can be paired with a variety of different dishes, making it a perfect addition to any meal or gathering. Its botanical notes make it an excellent match for traditional Scandinavian cuisine such as pickled fish, while its herbal profile pairs well with dishes like roasted meats and vegetables. This makes it an ideal spirit to serve with a dinner party, where it can complement a variety of dishes.
Finally, aquavit has a rich cultural history that is sure to appeal to history and culture enthusiasts. Originating in Scandinavian countries, aquavit has been a staple of celebrations and special occasions for centuries. The distillation process and use of specific herbs and spices are also deeply rooted in Scandinavian traditions, making it a truly authentic and special product.
And so, we, and a growing number of people, believe that aquavit has the potential to become a major player in the UK spirits market. With its versatility, food pairing options, artisanal appeal and rich cultural history, aquavit has something to offer for every type of drinker. As producers of the first aquavit from Wales and only the third in the UK, we are proud to be leading the charge in introducing this amazing spirit to a wider audience.
